Unpacking Sustainability

Exploring Recycling & Downgauging

Flexible Packaging

The world of sustainable packaging can be confusing with terms like recyclable, biodegradable, compostable and strategies around plastic reduction or switching from rigid packaging to flexible packaging.

My goal is to break down some key considerations and share Elite’s approach to developing sustainable flexible packaging options.

So, where do we start??

Let’s start with recycling and gauge reduction in flexible films.

Many of the current flexible packages you see on store shelves are composed of mixed materials. They are a combination of plastics such as PET/LLDPE (Polyethylene terephthalate/Linear low-density polyethylene) or PP/LLDPE (Polypropylene/ Linear low-density polyethylene). While functional, these mixed materials are NOT recyclable.

One of the biggest opportunities we have is shifting to an all Polyethylene structure. This shift can be a game changer. Now this package becomes recyclable and can be returned through widespread store drop-off recycling programs and keep the circular economy moving. As my boss would say, “how easy is that…”

In addition to recyclability, I am a big advocate for downgauging as a sustainable strategy. Polyethylene resin producers have enhanced resins with improved properties such as stiffness and toughness. This allows us to reduce film thickness while still meeting all performance requirements. You get the same durable, efficient packaging with substantially less plastic!

Based on your film needs, Elite can manufacture a film to help you hit your sustainability goals. If your application requires films with low haze, high stiffness, easy tear, heat resistance, quality print webs to be used for bags, form & fill, or stand-up pouches – contact us! We know we can help!
